Shielding Charlotte: How William and Kate Are Preventing a 'Spare' Struggle

Reports say that Prince William and Kate Middleton want to keep their daughter Princess Charlotte safe from the problems Prince Harry has had as the "spare" heir to the British throne.

Robert Hardman, a royal historian, talked about how the Prince and Princess of Wales are dealing with the fact that their 10-year-old daughter Charlotte is third in line to the throne, after her 11-year-old brother Prince George.

"The late Queen [Elizabeth II] was always very aware of that unique and difficult role of the No. 2," Hardman told People in an interview that came out Wednesday.

Because of this, Harman said, she had a soft spot for her sister Margaret, her son Andrew, and her grandson Harry.  "She knew what it was like to be second in a strictly hierarchical family and institution."  “Everyone is aware of that.”

In "The Making of a King," the author talked about how William needs to prepare not only for himself to become king one day, but also for his children to "find the whole royal life approachable and not scary."

Also, William, 42, and Middleton, 43, have a boy together, Prince Louis, 7. He is fourth in line to the throne.

Like Charlotte, Harry was born as the second in line to the British throne. When his nephews and sister were born, he fell to fifth place.
